I tend to disagree with so many contestants marketing themselves in this thread. We already know where to look for links to your sets. I would prefer to see here feedback from people who listened to some or all the sets. The greatest benefit to a contestant is to get a critique and be able to improve in the future, that if DJing is really what he/she wants to do.

I agree to some extent. But, marketing yourself and promoting is actually what DJing is all about in today's world. It's sad but it's true. Unless one is a remarkable producer where his or her tracks reaches the A list DJs they have ZERO chance of being noticed if they don't market and interact with people. DJing is not about saving all your money to buy 2 turntables and vinyls no more. That time where one use to spend countless hours learning how to craft the art is no more. Anyone can do it now and it's only going to get more competitive.

02.11.2012
01 Metrostatic (59:16) - good progressive set. exactly what I need for warm up
02 Darxis (61:56) - average, but very various trance set
03 Alfurez (59:04) - awesome uplifting set.
04 Galin Rashkov (60:53) - Another awesome set! My favourite
05 April Elyse (61:43) - everything is awesome: Flow, tracks...but TRANSITIONS!!!!
06 Lokki (61:31) -Technically set is good, but I don't feel flow.
07 Cold Rush (60:40) - The most original set (yes, I watched tracklists - the only set with the dj-own tracks)
08 DJ K4N (61:15) - look at set no. 06
09 Agger (61:12) - look at set no. 08
10 Enviate (58:09) - look at set no. 09
11 DJ Pavle (60:10) - look at set no. 10

03.11.2012
12 Distant Moon (59:57) - Very good selection, mate!
13 DJ Alex The Lion (61:00) - Any feedbacks? I personally think this guy should win one of 14 slots on EOYC 2012
14 Lucas Deyong (61:21) - Like commercial trance? If yes, then it's for you, but not for me
15 MiMaMix (59:59) - no words, only emotions. Just WOW.
16 Isaias Cobos (60:18) - you know, to end uplifting set with progressive track - not a deal. But it's the only thing I dislike in this set. 550 Senta should be the 1st or 2nd track in this set.
17 Kimochi (60:26) - very good, very good mix
18 Last Sunlight (61:07) - Just enjoyed this mix.
19 DJ Yutaka Viper (60:09) - just another average HQ trance set.
20 tranzLift (62:00) - These guys should win one of 14 slots on EOYC 2012. Reason: they use their own production in this mix. And this production is awesome.
21 Trancer (61:57) - Look at this guy, he's a real Trancer!
22 Sosenka (60:23) - great melodic set! Awesome vibe!
23 Kiddy (61:55) - ...guess...:)
24 Reech (61:05) - sorry, but I don't like pop music((
25 Voodoo Child (61:02) - uhmmm....I can't decide ..

Wait for the new feedback!

Till nov Ive listened to 3 sets, Ill listened to others later aswell, when I got some time.
Mardouk and Andromedha got quite good progressive sets, some tracks are very nice, but some not much, still they will get my vote :)
I miss some real deep progressive trance, Ive noticed in Mardouks set one and Im very glad for this.

And one uplifting set, that is from Alpha Dog, well a bit too many tracks in the mix, but it doesnt bother me much, he will get my vote too.
Thats so far from me now.

We have 2 weeks to listen to (in my case) 75 sets = more than 75 hours of listening. Be calm and listen to EOYC Contest Mixes you like. I decided to listen to every contestant this year. Personally I Think 90% of contestants have to be @ EOYC lineup.

Ive listened to few more sets on Mixcloud and some are great for me.
1st, a set from my slovenian mate Gogy Di, well the first two tracks are not for me, then it is great, good tracks and so on.
2nd, Matii G, very nice uplifting set, you definetly deserves a spot @ EOYC 2012
3rd, K4N, another great uplifting set, only first track annoys me but dotn mind at all
4th, Pavel Vakhrushev, thats one interesting set, combined with psy, breakbeat and uplifting trance, youve done great job as others aswell
Thats all for now from me.

17: Kimochi - My set feel free to comment, hope you guys enjoy it :)

66 : DJ Surfer - really impressive set with some loops add on the tracks
05: April - well make porg trance and prog-lifting trance set, I give a pass on transition due to herself using mouse
20: tranzLift - full load of uplifting trance... just like TranzLift music productions, deserve 14 slots
63:Andy Eliass - makes a very great set with uplifting trance and few tech- trance, just like his production... deserve 14 slots
03: Alfurez - the selections are great with uplifting trance, but the transition needs to work on a little bit
11 :good choice and selection for DJ Pavle
13: Alex The Lion -fantastic set of Uplifting trance and Tech Trance , enjoy your set. Your taste of trance music is as same as mine
12: Distant Moon- nicely done, as good as usually on prog-lifting trance, uplifting trance and tech trance. Good flow with mixture of three sub-trance genre
87: Kev Clerkin - slow and smooth Kevin with Prog trance and some Markus style, not bad... just a little transition error on 38:00, but still enjoy his 1 hr

Okay, Here's Another portion of critique.

04.11.2012
26 Impulsive (59:41) - This set made my day. Great Selection of tracks, perfect mixing and flow! but....the names of 1st and second tracks are wrong.
Right variant is:
1. Fadi & Mina - Kepler 22 (Andrew Rayel Aether Remix) | FSOE Recordings
2. Tomas Heredia - Moonlight | Captivating Sounds
27 Hesham van Seleem (62:35) - great megamix....but i don't like 50 % of tracks he used. sorry.
28 Protrapik (60:09) - hm.....
29 DJ Hike (61:09) - mmmm. good mix!
30 Wolvy (60:21) - mix is good, but transition between 07 & 08 tracks was veery bad. It's just my opinion.
31 Energetic Horizons (60:24) - I liked almost all track in this set! great taste.
32 Hamten (52:00) - great Set! The flow is clean, everything is great!

Tomorrow I'll listen other sets.

First the word is critique.

And, if you are trying to give critiques, learn your lingo first. Reech's set does not have any track which is known as 'pop music'. Pop music has artists which are known by the masses like Avicii, Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, etc. Not even one of these track classify as 'pop' or 'commercial'. The guy (or the girl) has placed well-known music only to those who are accustomed to Thursday 'terrible trance' shows. The flow is clean. And, Armin does not count. He has yet to see a Billboard hit.

There wasn't a "professional" board of evaluators of the sets so far...in previous years some of the winners got a hard critique for having too many votes from their friends. It was suggested to have professional board to evaluate the sets and the votes of the community count just a percent of the final mark. None of these have been put to the test yet, i think it is time consuming to listen to 100 sets. Yet, the adrenaline of the contest is worth while the effort. BTW, i have never won a spot in EOYC even if i have participated to every contest. While i have noticed that i'm the only one mixing in key (based on playlists that highlight this feature) and be technical about stuff, that didn't matter in the end :) Therefore this year i have put less time in making the set and have less hopes about getting one of those 14 spots. From my experience, about half the sets submitted for this contest are really good and they would deserve a spot...i might even suggest a joint set between winning contestants :)

and if key doesn't match, but you feel that tracks fits to each other you won't play them together because of keys? imo checking keys is for beginners... ofc it's usefull all the time, but many people can hear it without any knowledge of this rule, just because of experience

True, but some transitions do sound horrible if they are not in key. But as i said, a lot of ppl even don't know what that is, and imo it's not, cause bigginers haven't even heard for that. :) That is why they don't mix like that. Anyone is free to mix how each person think it's best. \o/

Trance music i the Universal Language \o/ :) I'm not here to argue. I think mix is key is good. Usually, every dj/producer that has a radio show makes mix in key, but as i said, anyone is free to do what ever he/she wants wile djing. That is the charm of it. :) At the end will it be good or bad, thats the other question. :)

I have mixed in key intentionally. But my set also includes some transitions that were not in key. I believe you won't recognize those transitions.

In my opinion mixing in key is a useful tool - especially for very long transitions. But you should also use your intuition. If you stick too much to mixing in key you become unflexible. And even in key transitions can sound horrible.

djyutaka
Nov 5th, 2012, 13:15
Yes, i agree. One transition in my set is not mixed in key, and it's not noticeable, and i also agree that sometimes transitions in key sound horrible, but we use our ears then :) For me it's good, cause I don't loose a lot of time choosing tracks that i'm going to mix, cause i'm streaming 2h live sets usually every day, so it's a good toll for me.

16. MiMaMix - Wow! Absolutely massive uplifting journey, definitely must enter the top14. This set is #1 for me till the date.

I've decided I wanted to leave some feedback for the sets I've listened to so far. I'll try to be as constructive as possible and leave some feedback you can work on. If you have questions about my criticism, please PM me and I'll try to answer the best I can.

01 Metrostatic - EOYC 2012 Contest
Nice selection of more progressive/well-known tracks, both new and a bit older. Be careful the transitions don't lose all the power, as it can ruin the flow. It didn't ruin much in this set, but if you want to keep on DJ'ing, remember to find a balance. But as said before, nice selection and they fit well together. Could work as an intro set for a party/event.

02 Darxis - EOYC 2012 Contest
Fairly enjoyable set, some average tracks, both well-known and something new and refreshing. Good job at picking both vocal and instrumental tracks. Try work a bit more on some of the transitions (Some of them are a bit messy; Too much going on) and the general flow.

03 Alfurez - EOYC 2012 Contest
Banging set with lots of powerful, uplifting tracks. Some think this is they way a set should be, and that's fine, but I think it compromises with the overall flow. You definitely picked some of the greater uplifting tracks which didn't sound much alike, which is a good thing. Try working a bit more on the transitions. Mixing an uplifting set is much harder than it looks and the transitions takes a lot of work!

04 Galin Rashkov - EOYC 2012 Contest
Again, a very uplifting, powerful set with great tracks by the likes of Temple One, Sean Tyas and Paul Webster. As said before, it ruins the overall flow, but if you like uplifting tracks, this is definitely one to pick. Try working on getting a smoother transition between the tracks. The transitions are not too long or too short, as many might make them, but on the general sounds and when to cut a track.

05 April Elyse - EOYC 2012 Contest
Nice to hear a set with an intro mix. It quickly gets uplifting which is fine, I just think it's a nice touch with an intro mix. The transitions could use a bit of work, but as said before, mixing uplifting tracks are very hard and takes a lot of work. Nice selection between vocal and instrumental tracks and superb ending track!

06 Lokki - EOYC 2012 Contest
Many of you know Lokki and his passion for uplifting trance, and that definitely shines through here. Technically there's not much wrong with this set. Some of the transitions are a bit messy and fast-paced, but I liked each individual track. Since it is a complete uplifting set, there is a lack of flow, but still very enjoyable due to the track-selection.

07 Cold Rush - EOYC 2012 Contest
Great to hear a set with own productions and ideas for each track. This can both be a very good thing, but can also be a bit dangerous as the set can end up lacking a flow from slow-to-fast or whatever, but you handled that fine here. Work a bit more on the transitions in the future and you could provide some very nice sets!

08 DJ K4N - EOYC 2012 Contest
Nice intro track and good use of both new and older tracks. I think it could get even better if you worked a bit more on the general flow. Try work a bit on the transitions to make each track connect a bit more to each other. Very nice energy though and 'lots of power! Definitely a set for the uplifting fans.

09 Agger - EOYC 2012 Contest
Good selection of tracks, but I think there's too many and it compromises with the overall flow. You have the skills to mix, but I think it would be better, if you took out half of the tracks and worked on a general idea. Nice selection of vocal and instrumental tracks.

10 Enviate - EOYC 2012 Contest
Nice to hear such a special and loveable track as the intro for your set! I think it's a nice evening set with fine, slow vibes, but it lacks a bit of flow. It doesn't really get anywhere and stays safe in the slower tracks. Fine transitions though! Altough it lacks some flow, I'll definitely save it for the late evenings.

1st, a set from my slovenian mate Gogy Di, well the first two tracks are not for me, then it is great, good tracks and so on.

3rd, K4N, another great uplifting set, only first track annoys me but dotn mind at all
4th, Pavel Vakhrushev, thats one interesting set, combined with psy, breakbeat and uplifting trance, youve done great job as others aswell

Not sure why people take criticism so personally? Everyone has their own opinion. But, at the same time you have to take into consideration what some of the feedback is and evaluate on your own to confirm if you agree or not. DJs that take every criticism personally have no chance of developing or exceeding to next level. Also there is no DJ here that can claim they never make mistakes. We all do in some way or another so again don't take things so seriously. Those that do should never enter contests because isn't that the whole purpose of a contest? In my book a contest is a competition where one is compared to another. I know few DJs that flipped off when I told them all the things they do wrong. But, hey they don't have to take my word for it or anyone elses. If one thinks he or she is that good that they need to make zero changes then they need to be playing at massive events and not applying for contests. That's my 2 cents =)

In my opinion mixing in key is a useful tool - especially for very long transitions. But you should also use your intuition. If you stick too much to mixing in key you become unflexible. And even in key transitions can sound horrible.

It seems that are mixed feelings about this "mixed in key" strategy and obviously none of us is a professional DJ to really understand the potential of clearly identify the key of each track. It is true that creativity, serendipity, feelings and everything else that makes us human play a vital role in a set and that's how it should be. Yet, when combining the human touch with the keys, only a better set can be the end result. From my experience, both these dimensions helped a lot in making outstanding sets, both for radioshows, or live in nightclubs. Once you have a large database of trance music, you have lots of flexibility to transition from one key to another so you can play your favourite tracks, or the tracks that you feel the audience is lustful for. As soon as i started using the key technique, my sets quality went through the roof. While not a perfect technique, it seems to provide excellent results in most of the cases. Usually mixed in key is applied for short transitions in my opinion, withing 4bits or so so that keeps the flow going. Long transitions are more towards creating mash-ups, yet the right key combinations is very helpful. However, mash-up are usually created in a production software rather than using 2 decks and a mixer. Remember that the only way to mix two tracks that have huge difference in BPMs is using the mixed in key approach...Armin himself is agreeing with this :) Happy mixing!

:iagree: :iagree: Well said :bravo:

Every DJ makes mistakes all the time, it's part of the process - but learning to take criticism is one of the most important things you can ever learn to do. Even if your sets are flawless there are still people who won't like them, and they're perfectly entitled to feel that way if they choose to, as well, as music taste is a personal choice at the end of the day :)

The only advice I could give anyone when approaching a contest like this would be this - anyone can make a list of beautiful words that they like and put them in a sentence, but poetry comes in putting the right words in the right order

That's an interesting point. Until now, I haven't seen it that way.

I haven't done many mashups, yet (with production software of course). But in my experience it is essential for a mashup to use tracks that have compatible keys unless you use only unmelodious samples of one track.

Remember that the only way to mix two tracks that have huge difference in BPMs is using the mixed in key approach. Can you please explain that? I don't understand what the difference is to mixing tracks of similar BPM and why mixing in key is the only way to mix tracks which have huge difference in BPM.

Sorry for being off topic.

BTW I appreciate feedback to my set.

06 Lokki - EOYC 2012 Contest
Many of you know Lokki and his passion for uplifting trance, and that definitely shines through here. Technically there's not much wrong with this set. Some of the transitions are a bit messy and fast-paced, but I liked each individual track. Since it is a complete uplifting set, there is a lack of flow, but still very enjoyable due to the track-selection.

thank you very much Kata for your feedback.

For me I could tell, my style is for some people impossible or this is just my thinking, but im listening to many genres, including from uplifting trance to underground sounds of deep progressive, like breakbeat, psybient, ambient, downtempo. Sometimes it is hard to balance this, current trance scene just dont give me enough sometimes and deep sounds bring more than just an ordinary (emotional) uplifting track. Ive found some great progressive sets here @ Contest and will gladly give a vote for them.
Just my opinion.

11 DJ Pavle - EOYC 2012 Contest
Very solid opening track! Be careful you don't mix the tracks to fast as some of the tracks melodies tends to overlap each other. Again, superb energy and power; A real treat for uplifting fans. Like I said before, a 100% uplifting set lacks some flow, and that's also the problem here. You can still make a very uplifting set with a flow by picking a slower first track and try to build it up from there. Nice set though, enjoyed it!

12 Distant Moon - EOYC 2012 Contest
Great track for a uplifting set, you actually manage to pick a relative slow track as an opener and then pick it up from there. The transition between track 2 and 3 could be a bit better, but overall I think you did a pretty good job at mixing your tracks. Also nice you picked a few vocal tracks. Again, a very uplifting set with difficult transitions, but all in all, pretty good!

13 DJ Alex The Lion - EOYC 2012 Contest
Great to hear an intro mix as it sets the mood for the rest of the set. Oh, and this set is also uplifting! A real treat for uplifting fans so far! Work a bit more on your transitions as some of them lose some energy and ruins the general flow. Try work a bit more on beat-matching as well. I think you did a nice job at picking a bit more unheard of uplifting tracks, for me at least, but it lacks a bit of flow. It constantly travels through the 138BPM journey, which some definitely will approve though.

15 Isaias Cobos - EOYC 2012 Contest
Nice trackselection and fine mixing at most moments. I would probably reverse the tracklist a bit, but the last two tracks as number 1 and 2, but that's just me. It would create a better flow to the set and make it even more enjoyable. Some of the transitions are a bit messy, but I think you handle it pretty well in general.

16 MiMaMix - EOYC 2012 Contest
'Lots of energy in this one! You know how to pick some high energy and powerful tracks all the way through and keep it at a high BPM all the way through. Be careful with the transitions and mastering of the tracks. The transitions gets a bit to loud at some places and there's a noticeable difference in the overall volume of each track. Your track selection is great though and I know many will like your set!

17 Kimochi - EOYC 2012 Contest
Fine power and energy, again a very uplifting set. You have a great taste for the harder side of the uplifting trance and have a great trackselection. Be careful with the transitions though, they are very long and pretty much appears at the very last of each track. Try pushing the boundaries a bit and make the transitions come sooner; it'll create a better flow and perhaps even make space for one more track.

18 Last Sunlight - EOYC 2012 Contest
Very nice first track, nice energy, but still invites you to a much greater set with even more power. Pretty nice transitions and overall flow, try work a bit more on your mixing skills when the bass is very dominant and beat-matching. You did a fine job at picking the right tracks at the right moment.

19 DJ Yutaka Viper - EOYC 2012
Technically a very fine set with smooth transitions. Not as uplifting as many of the other sets, but still with a lot of energy. Especially the first 30 minutes is great, technically speaking. The transitions gets a bit edgy at the last 30 minutes, when the more banging tracks enters. Uplifting tracks are, as said before, very hard to mix! Keep on practicing!

20 tranzLift - EOYC 2012 Contest
Slow set at around 110 BPM... no really, this is tranzLift, what did you expect? Of course this is a very banging set from the very beginning. Nice to hear some of your own productions too. Some of the transitions are a bit messy because the mixing starts to early. It definitely keeps the energy high, but also ruins the overall flow a bit.

Verdict so far: (Set 1 - 20)
Overall I think everyone did a very nice job. I often complain about a lack of flow, but it can be VERY hard to create a nice flow, when you only have 60 minutes and especially if you stick with one genre all the way through. Mixing uplifting tracks can be very hard and I suggest you to start with 134-136 BPM tracks, just for practice and then work your way up. Many of the sets have been 80-100% uplifting, which I feared a bit from the beginning, but that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy each set.

BPM variation changes the key of the track. For example a track originally created at 130 BPM has a different key at 138BPM. Therefore, playing with these attributes, one can mix two tracks that have incompatible keys at the original BPM.

BTW, you're not offtopic, it is about critiquing, learning, improving, and sharing your value with someone...everyday :)
