Why no EDM in Sweden?

Varför engelska? Jag och de svenska dj´s och producenter har diskuterat detta ett antal ggr och kommit fram till det enkla svaret att den svenska musikmarknaden hamnat i en ond spiral av schlager och Idol "musik" och med tanke på hur marknaden ser ut så är det ingen som vågar pusha alternativ musik i svensk media. Det är en sådan liten marknad och det stora bolagen styr allt från top till tå här. Finns ingen konkurrens i radio, tv och klubb.. Alla kör följa jon.. Spelar NRJ tex en låt some de tillsammans med Sony Music tex kommit fram till att detta "ska" bli en hit så blir det så och alla de mindre stationer följer efter för de tror att de är vad folk vill höra oavsätt vad de är för skit.

Halva året går åt till att tjata ut alla schlager låtar till man vill hänga sig och sedan precis när det börjar avta lite så är det Idols tur. OCH sen får vi en släng med alla dessa hrliga dansband mellan ronderna.

Allvarligt vilken modernt land idag har en sån usel musik kultur som sverige idag? Inget land jag har besökt i alla fall. De har faan fetare klubbar och mer alternativ musik i Sibirien och då skämtar jag inte. Sverige var på top inom musikindustrin en gång i tiden och det lever "dem" på fortfarande de trångsynta gammla gubbarna.

House musiken har ju lyfts dock en hel del vilket jag ser som positivt, MEN de e bara en trend och kommer avta. Snart är det hip stutts som dånar på klubbarna igen.

Min poäng är precis som en vän som var här och hälsade på från Tyskland/Berlin och han sa det.. Vart e alla klubbar? ... Ja du sa jag det är inte i som berlin i alla fall.. Shit no .. sa han, vi måste slänga in folk och fixa bra dj´s varje helg.. annars går de nån annanstans.

Och ja de e ju sant. Klubbarna i Sverige har oftast ingen konkurrens alls så varför ska de spendera massa pengar på en dyr dj om de inte behöver.. de fyller ju lokalerna ändå.

Så vill du ha bra klubb och musik kultur så bor du i fel land. Därför drar ju alla Svenska talanger utomlands och signar med utländska bolag.

Musik sverige har sedan länge tillbaka börjat vittra sönder av egen maskin och jag tror inte vi kommer se någon ändring tills de står på knäna.

En positiv sak jag märkt är att ända sedan MTV började ta tillbaka makten på de lokala landskanalerna så har det spelas mycket mer alternativ. (MTV Sverige var nog ganska styrt av de svenska pamparna) I går kväll var det allt från Rank 1 med LED till gamla godingar med The Prodigy..

Jag nämner Radio och TV hela tiden för att det är nyckeln till en bättre klubbkultur. När jag var 18 var Trance det enda du hörde nästa på klubbarna i Sverige (1999) kanske inte så konstigt men det var det jag växte upp med och det var fantastiskt. Så det går, men måste få ett större kommersiellt värde eftersom det inte är nytt och hippt som det var då. DÅ kan vi få tillbaka detta tror jag.

There used to be some fantastic music coming from sweden back in the day, really international stuff. Why have sweden gone POP? Money! It sells very well here, then it sells on TV, then it sells at concerts etc etc

Like you said, not very many modern countries enjoy country and western these days...even Poland (no offence) has a FANTASTIC dance scene...and this is how I think we can get peoples opinions changing. A lot of my friends here used to say my music i listen to is SH!T, until they actually listened to it and then they realized actually they have never heard "real" EDM before, just the shit that gets played on the radio (AKA Bass hunter).

I would love the opportunity to run a campaign (TV/RADIO/PRINT) that was simply..

"Join us Sweden"

With shots of sexy people (like me) in a massive great rave, having fun and just one person holding out their hand saying joins us sweden. All with landmarks from various countries, implying sweden is JUST ABOUT the last country to get on board with he EDM scene(which is also pretty much true). I would hope this would wake people up to the fact Sweden is a million miles behind because it being run by old timers, not the youth of Sweden!!

I fear this would never happen. Where I live people are too conscious about themselves to even DANCE! All I hear is how "the vikings are the best" and "us vikings dont feel emotion" etc etc then they put on some HARD rock (from the 80s) and ROCK ON. When I talk of dancing and talking to strangers and having a laugh dressing up they think im mental (or gay...you know because only gays dress up)

I am determined to get dance music a chance here...My mates think im crazy for living here as they know how much i love EDM...but I think right now is the time to start pushing it. Its tough times and clubbing is a great way to forget your troubles for the night. This is exactly how it started in the UK late 80s/ early 90s

The reson for sweden having this infected pop culture is becuse of the few
labels we have (I.E Sony, Universal, Bonnier etc) are runned by the heads
back in the US or UK. They dont have the economy to have a broader selection
in music so this is what we get. They play all cards safe and any music that
doesnt have somebody singing in it or has a bpm higher than 130 is not music
in thair ears.

The Swedish music industry is so blinded by thair own egos so they have no
idea whats going on in rest of europe. The Swedish radio is slowly dieing due
to that they dont dare to play anything else then what the few big labels
tells them to push.

They just say "This is what people want to hear" and the radiostations just
agrees and do what they say. There is no competition in the music industry
in Sweden any longer and this is why it looks like it does today.

I have worked as a promotion manager on a EDM orientated label here in sweden and worked with names Tiesto, 4 Strings, Bart Cleasson and i eaven brought Armin Van Buuren to Sweden and managed after alot alot of hard
work to get Armin to the Swedish radiostations. So if u ever hear In And Out Of Love or Going Wrong on the radio in Sweden i was the one pushing it out. ;)

So it can be done but it alot of work and more power. I mean if we had a label
like Armada or Black Hole here in Sweden that could kick out the major "pop-labels" from the clubscene it would have looked different. Atleast thats what i
belive.

I almost never go out on clubs these days anymore cus the avarage quality
of the clubs here sucks. I mean if i had the finacials to start my own club
like MOS or GK ie, where the main focus is the music and the dj where its all
about crating a quality club experience with well known dj´s it would look
so much different than it does today. This would put fire in the ass of the
clubowners all around to compete with it and that would the first seed to
a succesful clubscene i think.

So shure it can be done but it needs to start some where, but as it looks now
and has been like this for a long time is that to many people are happy with how the clubs are today since many dont have anything else to compare with.

The scene is there, the talents are there and the passion is there but there is no one in command so it all just stands still.

A club has always been a dream of mine, as to be honest it would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Clubs here, like you already said, have no competition and are therefore boring. No creativity, same old shit in every club. It doesnt take much to make a club unique, just a bit of effort and imagination.

Im seriously thinking of setting up a trance night in Got, advertise the hell out of it and get a crowed together. No need to start of in my own club, just get a venue, and if all goes well maybe do things off the back of that!

BUT

My first move is a podcast. A swedish based Trance podcast. Its going to be in Swedish and a bit of English, have interviews etc etc but most importantly im going to ask anyone that listens to it to ring up and share with everyone else their plans, what they are doing, where they are going and how twisted they are. I just purchased a Tonium Pacemaker so I can mix and record some sets where ever I am, which would become the pod cast. I still have contact with some names back in the UK so hopefully setting up some interviews will go nicely, but I will be focusing on Swedish talent. I used to promote for GK about 5 or 6 years ago in the south of the UK. Around about the same time they did gatecrasher ICE. Good times

Hey dude sorry for a late reply. Been busy busy with some new tracks coming soon.

First of all im located in north of Stockholm.

Second i really admire your passion and goals. This is why UK has a clubscene and we dont cus of people of you. Problem is that we need more people like you wanting to take command. If you have any connections back in the UK from GK i would try to use them in some way.

I know MoS did a try to get into the Scandinavian market some years ago but failed totally, but i think it was just after the first big trancewave had past and they where to late so it never became anything big.

The podcast is a good idea, but the best would be to have something similar to Dave Pearce show on BBC 6 ie. Have some guest dj´s coming and play there etc. Was a show like that some years ago called NRJ Extravadance and P3 Klubb. Extravadance died and P3 Klubb is totally infected with house and electro (since it seems to be the "trend" atm). I hope someday someone would hijack it and make it to what i once was and maybe highlight the many talents that we actully have here. We have a station in Stockholm called 107.5 which is dance oritentated and should have a show like that. So there are some "forums" still alive but only just since most people behind the "decks" arent realy to involved in whats happening outside the commercial scene, which IS the big scene in EDM. So a show like that would most sertainly create some awareness.

I personally have a "show" here one time every month with 1000+ listeners and its only a mix. Would be cool tho to do inerviews to and if you start your show i know some that you could have on your show. Sebastian Brandt, Akesson, Shossow, Airbase and my self =P etc..

The recordlabel i worked for was called TMC Nordic / The Dance Division. As a producer and dj i work mostly with UK based label called Monster Tunes.

But i think you should go with your vision and show the people how a REAL club should be. I my self would have loved to have my own club to and be more involved in the Swedish clubscene, but i have lost abit of hope and thats we most of us from here seek outside the borders and it works. I mean most of the people here dont know about any of us or they just dont care.

mondaybar is currently in control of the biggest (still kinda small) dance events in sweden, they've been for a couple of years now.

the edm music in sweden is completely stuck to dance like basshunter, sax brothers etc.. people want to club to it if the beats are hard enough.

although there is some alternative played at "victorias" in kungsträdgården, people usually dissapear from the dancefloor.

PS. ferry corsten is having a couple day visit in sweden in march!

Yeah I have been keeping my eye on the MondayBar and its happenings. they get some good talent up on the decks (John O'Callahan springs to mind) so would like to try get in a visit some time for sure.

I didnt realise Corsten was heading to Sweden, I can see him coming here becuase he has more of an electro-trance sound at the moment and I can see that being more "accepted" here, where abouts he playing at? You are right about basshunter etc...all you have to do is watch the "dance" compilation adverts on TV to see they are WAY OFF the mark...but like I said, it sells but in the meantime EDM in Sweden gets stuck in a commercial pit of shit.

I will have to see if I can get a group together for Corsten in March, would be my first rave in Sweden.

What I dont understand is there is so much land/old farms.old factories that would be great to have a massive session, but no one does it...so lets start something in Sweden and do something worth talking about back home. Its not hard, I done it many times in the UK. Get some speakers add some lights and then a dash of DJing and you got yourself a fuc*ing mad one!

Not really, Space, Lights, Staff and DJs cost a lot of money (probably a few millions for a great nice show for 8 hours)
Since theres hardly are any interest here no one would be able to make a profit if setting up a show. Theyve tried a few times but its either canceled/moved/changed to less DJs.
Tiesto comes here once or twice a year but thats pretty much it (Tiesto turning mainstream so its okay to bring him here, at least people will buy the tickets)

I suggest go to Danmark or Holland if you wanna see some great shows. Amsterdam is a lovely city (even if you dont drink or smoke, which I dont) nice people, much stores, cozy city overall and great great trance parties (people from all round the world come to join them)
