I dunno, maybe because the Trance scene here is practically non-existant and everything electronic is "techno" to the Canadians..but man..when I try to say it's trance, not techno, trance not techno..and show them explicit differences between trance and techno..they just dont see it..Are we special or something, to be able to discern musical differences? Maybe when I'm a major I should move to Europe..because I haven't found 1 person I've met face to face that is into trance. Sure, people can like a track here and there..but they're not into it like we are..

You have it easy in Canada :) Here in the States. Techno=That "POP" Dance stuff that comes out on the radio. The word Trance dosent EXIST!!!

They dont exist :) At least not in the States

i have the same problem here in texas.....there is very few people that i meet that love trance...sometimes i think that i am living in the wrong country :lol:the most ive meet is here on AH in which i love and of course at DJ sets :bravo:

i can say that i am 1000% trance made! :bravo::super:and i know very few girls who are really into trance like i am :) gotta love us females! :bravo:

but i do hate when people call trance techno! i find that VERY offensive...but then again i give them a trance lesson and put of some of my mad beatzz! :super::bravo:

Well TranceAmerica it is kinda justified..seeing as most pop today consists of a 4/4 beat with kicks and claps and an irregular bassline/melody..

I started out with Electronic Music very young (8 ish?) and it has evolved from techno to trance over the years..now as a teen I've found my genre. But..some of these people's arguments..

"It sounds the same dude"
"Isn't the same track as before?"
"Get that shit out of here..put some MuSiC on"
"This stuff is so boring"

I dun geddit. Maybe I show it to them in the wrong contexts or something..

I presented a project last year for one of my courses..the point was to plan a pilgrimage..So I planned my pilgrimage to Trance Energy one day in Utrecht. When I showed them the Trance Energy ad..most people were glued to the projection..

Problem is, I think they were more attracted to the atmosphere/lights than the music.

I think I'll move to somewhere in Europe one of these days...at least Trance is alot more common there..

I agree with you quite a bit... my only advice is to keep at it. i have the same situation here, everyone refers to all EDM as 'that techno stuff' and i have wasted to much breath trying to explain the differences.

i say keep at it because i have sparked at least a little interest among my friends by DJing when we have get togethers and parties. at first they were not that interested but now after hearing trance and progressive and not just Benni Benassi or Darude, they actually appreciate it. Many of my friends actually enjoy it now... i have a fairly large group going to see ALY & FILA with me tomorrow, compared to the 2 of us that went to see Sean Tyas back in June lol

funny side note: the girl im currently dating just texted asking if i was Going to the TECHNO thing tomorrow (Aly & Fila= Techno, ill be sure to tell them ) :wall::wall::wall:

Hello Tarek:friends: I appreciate what your talking about even though I come from europe. I can understand. Fortunately on the internet you can find many places to go where we can meet people of simla mind such as here. So, though you may not find many people of like mind in public you can come here and find many American and Canadian people of all ages who are deeply into trance. Plus we have here djs from your continent and America playing here so proving there are many people of your continent who are into trance and also understand the basic difference between trance and techno.

Thing is at one time even in europe trance and techno were considered to be virtually as one thing which is music made from electronic technology. Fortunately here in europe we have moved away from the old techno encompasing everything and into each genre having its own spin off name.

The fact that it hasn't happend in your country maybe due to your country being so vast it encompases so many different forms of music. Many people have not defined trance as a genre of its own because its not played regularly on commercial radio. And sometimes people young and old just find trance almost purely by chance as I did some twelve or thirteen years ago. Just heard a certain kind of sound one day and fell in love with it. I didn't even know it was called trance back then. And I certainly didn't know anybody else who knew anything about it. Just had to search it out for myself.

Where I live in England trance is quite well known now and popular though it is little played on commercial radio during the day, they play pop mostly. Though there are djs who have shows of their own on commercial radio mostly at the weekend and at night here such as Judge Jules, Pete Tong and Dave Pearce. Its really more about dance music as a whole than just trance music.

And really dance music includes lots of different genres. In America and maybe Canada too the roots of music are a little different to europe. Things like country music, rock and hip hop are predominantly an American concept and those continents tend to be more rooted in that kind of music compared to europe where say country music to use as an example is virtually none existant in popular music culture, certainly amongst the young.

The thing is trance is accessable to everybody if they want to find it. You can find it on thousands of stations on the internet and meet people of like mind on forums like this from all over the world. Basically the internet is the place to be if you want to find people of like mind. The outside public is to wide a spectrum if you know what I mean. To many different genres of music to choose from. Outside of the net its more of a game of chance that you might find people who are into trance.

There is also the thing about age. Forinstance I am fifty five years old. I'm not going to find many people of my age here in england in public who are into trance. They would look at me like i'm crazy. They think its a young persons thing. On here though its different, we all become as one were young and old merge in the name of trance. Age doesn't matter here. Here I'm proud to say I have close friends of all ages and all have a common deep love of trance or they would not be here.

Even though I come from europe five of my six closest friends are from either America or Canada and they all have one thing in common, this deep love of trance. But I would only have met them in a specialist place like this. Had I lived in say America or Canada or anywhere else for that matter the chances of meeting a like mind person would be slim certainly for somebody of my age because the choice of music is so very wide out there. This is how I see it, anyway:):grinning:

What you're saying is 100% correct. The paradox with "It's a young people's thing"..certainly is a generalization because my age in my area adore hardcore metal or death metal by indie bands and the such. If not, you have the people that are into the hip-hop/rap culture (I say culture because alot of the obsessive ones try to adopt similar lifestyles to the artists..how little they know ..

Maybe it is most common with people in their 20s to like electronic music as a main genre (mainly trance).

Jeff I think what happened to you will happen to me. I played trance for the school for outdoor events..and I dont think it seemed appropriate (hell I'm biased towards trance, anywhere is appropriate!) ..but I will be "DJing" (In other words I will be clicking away at a laptop with 2 sound cards ) and will probably slip in alot of trance between the playlist I will be given..

Maybe people will like it, but I don't think they will come and ask what genre it is...and instead assume its "some good techno ..(or the new hip name for it: electro [which is wrong ..])

"Ohhh you like Techno"

Everytime they askme whats in the MP3.

Yeah this AFH .FM Board is cool because i see there is people here from the States :bravo:. Who share the same passion for TRANCE as i do.

you know what really gets me.. its this mc/presenter dude on this site.
i flinch every time he speaks in that ridiculous ogre voice of his.

thats exactly how it is with my friends... they dont get it at all

I had a conversation the other day with a trance person and we were talking that maybe we take/look at the music very differently than other ppl do.. for them it is instruments that makes noise/sound and sometimes all them together sounds nice when for us (read trance heads) its much more like feelings, emotions, sounds and even imagination. i dunno what other ppl thinks?

To Sunny Tomorrow I could say they still are treated as the same here in Europe i mean (techno & trance) among the ppl that doesnt really know about EDM scene. For example if I go to Ministry of Sound sometimes theres a lot of ppl that doesnt have a cooking clue about the genres but they just go there coz its "cool thing" and most of them are young ppl around their 20's. surely they do recognise the word Trance but if u asked them pick up a trance tune out of 5 given choices it prolly would go wrong  but if u see an older person there they prolly are "pro's" but basic arrangement with "normal" ppl (read ppl not into EDM) there is rock, hip hop, pop... and that one thing.. what it is? hmm oh yes TECHNO :lolz:

Mmm, interesting insight. I don't get out that much in clubs these days but I had imagined that at least people here in Uk or europe as a whole would be over the business of the Techno encompass's everything scenario:grinning:

Here in LA anything EDM-related is also just called "Techno" by outsiders, and it always seems to be stereotypically associated usually by genre:

1. Raves and drug abuse (Hard Trance, Hard House, Psy/Goa, Techno, Hardcore, Breakbeat, D&B)
2. Homosexuality (House, Uplifting Trance, Vocal Trance, Vocal House, Happy Hardcore, Dance)
3. Just "being kinda weird" in general (Progressive Trance, Progressive House, Chillout/Ambient)

If any of those are true (which they're not), then I guess that means all Hip-hop listeners really are criminals

Had to reply, see a lot of left coasters, and thos down below, the problem persists on the right coast as well. Ive come to call it electronic music because i cringe whenever i hear the word techno used to describe trance. Its terrible though, i have to say i like electronic music, its like techno but not goofy, which never suffices as an answer. To say its trance would be too much for these people to hear, but i had an amazing encounter, with a guy i work with. I am the youngest guy at my job by a lot, like 25 - 30 years younger than most, but i was talking music the one day with a guy who is 50 or so, and i said how no one in the shop could enjoy what i listened to and he asked me what it was so i just said trance hoping to avoid the explanation. He looked right at me and gave me a smile and almost yelled "i love trance!" i was blown away, moral is you just never know, this music is so global and far reaching, if it hits the right ears it will stick forever.

Oh wow I didn't see this topic either. Yeah I just call it electronic music now. I used to try to explain it to people but people hear that drumbeat and get stuck. I am kind of getting my friends into it now, but I think it's because I've tried to figure out what they're not hearing. Most music on the radio has words, and most of the music I listen to doesn't. So I hear a lot more in the music than they would. I've shown them how tracks are mixed together and how even though the beat sounds the same, different things happen over it. It helps them a lot.
Can't wait to go to Europe though and see what it's like over there.

You 55 years old???

Buddy why dont you simply go to the Bal en Blanc, in montreal. There's like 20 000 people who love trance.

ok just like starburst i just found this thread. And wanted to say here in WA, in the US, i've gotten lucky cause i have a electronic station. But like some of you were saying, people around here seem to just love rap and pop music, its so irritating. I love all kinds of Electronic music (mainly trance) and there seems to be practicly no one in America that likes it too. And I'm defiantlly the only girl from here that has a crush on a boy who is a trance dj. I mean girls are always just obessed with these boys in pop, rnb or rock bands. It is really irritating when no one knows anything about this kind of music. I'm hoping when I turn 18 and start going to collage i will find at least one person that likes this kind of music. Cause i don't relate at all to all that other stuff. Maybe its just cause i haven't met enough people yet in my life but all the time I feel like i don't fit in at all. So i'm glad i can come on here and talk about trance. And yes me and my oldest sister love trance so we talk about djs and stuff some times, and my whenever Dad hears us talking about it he acts like he doesn't know anything about it and always just calls it techno lol so funny! And we're like its called trance Dad! but he doesn't ever catch on.

I have the same problem, it always bugs me when the people down here just classify everything with a fast beat techno, they dont get the difference. Only one of my friends will even let me put it on lol, but im staying persistant and hoping they will come around and enjoy trance one day. I just love listening to a track a hearing everything thats involved in it like an andy blueman production theres just so much deepth and emotion in it.

Well, I am just used to being different... don't even think a lot about it anymore and gave up on converting my friends over to trance. (Although there are some tracks that nobody can resist. Take ATB feat. Tiff Lacey - My Everything, for example)

I moved to the States from Russia about 5 years ago and realized that the word "trance" doesn't mean much to anybody over here. I think EDM and particularly trance music got some bad publicity over the years (no idea why??) and everybody who listens to it is considered "weird".
Not to mention that I'm a girl and am usually expected to listen to some pop crap.
Well, it is OK.
I'm happy there are people online that I can connect with and learn about new releases!
