Silk's 44th release unites the talents of Ottawa natives Chris Girard and Simon Sheppard. The former has inspired progressive audiences with his signature "fluid" and soulful style for half a decade, ever since the triumphant "Rideau Street." The latter, a relatively new face in the scene, can now fairly be added to the ever-growing litany of progressive talents from Ontario, including recent label contributor Soundprank.

The Original Mix of their new collaboration, "Perfect Days," begins with a lovely broken-beat intro, as a soothing, dreamlike atmosphere begins to envelop the track. The chilled atmosphere is quickly livened up with a driving, classic prog bassline. As the main build fully comes into form, we are met with a variety of bell-like synth effects and gorgeous ! pads, which lead into the ethereal break. There, we are met by a "dancing" piano solo -- icing on the cake for this standout melodic prog beauty.

The first of two remixes is by label veteran Approaching Black, who always contributes a sonic craftsman's touch to his work. On his take, he has chosen to turn the original into a darker prog stormer, with a heavy rhythm section and a reverberating, sixteenth-note bassline. The main melodic themes of the original begin to take shape at the quarter turn, by way of an equally furious lead synth. In the main break, the exceedingly gifted Australian takes his hand off the accelerator and allows the tune to breath a bit, with some lovely variations on the original melodies.

The second and final remix comes from artist-to-watch, Jake Benson, who has already released lovely work on affiliates Mango Alley and Particles this year. Benson's take is a bit more stripped down, which serves the package well as a more "modern," mi! nimal-melodic rendering. Centering the track on a lovely chord! progres sion, the track becomes increasingly layered, with lush pads and vox stabs punctuating the mix as well. In the break, the bell synths of the original are creatively processed, as the chords hypnotically filter in and out of the mix.
