We've been singing the praises of progressive breaks specialist Abdomen Burst for years now, and following a brilliant recent rendering of Pinkbox Special's "The French Don't Cry", we hope 2012 proves to be a breakthrough year for this Russian talent. His latest single, "Changes", is a collaboration with newcomers Malevich and Yavanndiel. The song begins with a gorgeously processed percussionsection and a gurgling, outer-worldly bassline. Various other atmospheric effects and side-chained pad sounds enter the soundscape, as well as a variety of high-octane spoken-word effects. As the song approaches the main break, the drums and bass filter out, and we are left with a few breath-taking, fluttering arps, the gentle cry of a female vocalist, and the poignant sounds of an electric guitar.

Russian newcomer Malevich offers a prog trance alternative to the original, with a DJ-friendly intro and rich bassline groove. Most of the main melodic motifs from the original are included, as are a few new arp lines. The main break, however, is the real treat; Malevich has processed the vox effects in a highly innovative fashion, a stuttering array of stabs that string together gorgeously. The drop to follow is also breathtaking, as a beautiful new lead is introduced.

English artist Fretwell, the first remixer in the package, has production credits spanning a decade, and the sophisticated sounds of his rendering reflect this experience in the breaks genre. His interpretation is centered on a lighter breaks rhythm and a repeating, hynoptic bassline groove. Forlorn female vox punctuate the mix, as do a variety of pad effects. With only a short break in the latter half of the track, the energy in this one crescendoes steadily, and thus the overall aural experience is quite moving.

Polish artist Monojoke has been with Silk since our early days, and his contributions have been supported on radio by the likes of Above & Beyond, James Grant, Matt Darey, and many more. His remix begins with an extended, beat-less intro, in which the subtle melodic tones and celestial effects are left to stand alone. A prog breaks rhythm slowly creeps in, as does an edgy bassline. We also are treated to the incisive guitar from the original mix, which once again fills out the main break. As to be expected from a Monojoke production, numerous other atmospheric and melodic layers continue to be added as the track progresses.
