There are millions of people who are sitting in front of their computer right now trying to figure out how promote music to reach masses and how do they make people become a fan to care about their music in the first place. Each individual is different and unique in their approach to grab the attention of their fans or paying customer.

Here are some mistakes to avoid that will save you time and a lot of money.

1. Please have a clear and concise goal when you start.

2. Counting on friends and family to help for free.
3. Trying to reinvent the wheel. People are already programmed a certain way to the way the system is.
4. Before creating an album or a group from an executive aspect extensive research should have been done to see if there was enough people in that market to support the style of music that you are doing.
5. Marketing a product is more important than the product itself.

New trend of marketing includes giving out free material and on youtube with those 'artistic' photographs

Also, making a budget for advertising. Studying demographics so you know what audience to target, and where. And then advertising in those places, for 3-5 days over the weekends, during peak internet usage times.

And getting a finger on the pulse of what's happening in said scene. Do you make trance that sounds a little retro? Then maybe use slogans that tap into people's nostalgia, or desire for a "return to the roots." Do you have more of a bigroom house sound? Then direct your advertising at the "new" ravers in the US, where that sound is extremely popular at festivals and massives. Those are just examples.

Also, look at who you are, what you do, and where you are, and want to be, in the world. See how you can craft an image out of that that's specifically yours, and then push it. If that means making certain kinds of facebook posts, dressing a certain way at shows, and doing certain things, then do it. Do it as hard as you can. But -don't- try to mimic anyone else. If you try to craft yourself in the same mold as an already-established superstar, you'll look like a phony. Be yourself, and be as LOUD about being yourself as possible.

Those are just a few smart tips for self-promotion and marketing that nobody seems to get. I've got a longer list of tips for new producers and DJs, that touches on this stuff, but I don't wanna make people fall asleep here xD
