"The Grandmaster" is yet another retelling of Ip Man's life that is portrayed by Tony Leung this time around. The Chinese martial arts film mostly takes place between 1930 and 1952 with Ip Man's time in Foshan, his journey to Hong Kong once the Japanese invaded Foshan, becoming a martial arts master, and a brief mention of his death in 1972. Gong Yutian (Wang Qingxiang), a master from the North, comes to the South to hold a ceremony naming Ma San (Zhang Jin) as the heir to the North. After Gong Yutian encourages the South to do the same, the furious Northern masters are dealt with by Ma San rather effortlessly and Ip Man is called in to pick up the pieces. Worried that her father may lose a fight for the first time ever, Gong Yutian's daughter Gong Er (Zhang Ziyi) tries to convince him to not confront Ip Man. Their fight evolves into a battle of wits that has Ip Man walk away triumphant. "The Grandmaster" then evolves into not only a film chronicling Ip Man’s life but also martial arts in general
