Tutu Moraes, DJ and musical producer, started taking Brazilian music to dance floors in the late 90’s. His unusual music-sets have a grouping of different genres that combine ”pontos“ de umbanda and candomblé (Afro-Brazilian religions), ”carimbó”, “frevo”, “maxixe”, “gafieira”, the “tropicália” musical movement and even “marchinhas” (classic Carnaval songs). Besides this remarkable mix, Tutu’s composition embodies all the various samba segments and the independent Brazilian music, thus creating an atmosphere of wide and diverse repertoire.

His highly self-expressing work took him outside dance floors; on cinema, Tutu Moraes made the musical research for the script and signed the soundtrack of Laís Bodansky’s Chega de Saudade. He is also responsible for the musical research for the critically acclaimed Terra Vermelha, by Italian director Marco Becchis and contributed in the documentary A Tal Guerreira, by Marcelo Caetano, about Brazilian music diva, Clara Nunes. Always seeking diversity, Tutu began to include in his research the “brega” universe of Brazilian music, enriching even more the possibilities for Brazilian music experimentation on a dance floor.

Nowadays all of this blends, but very spontaneously, at the very popular Santo Forte party, created by Tutu Moraes eight years ago, that brings a general gathering of Brazilian music from all times and that takes more than a thousand people every month to Grand Metrople (downtown Sao Paulo) to dance to the sound of his repertoire and the different rhythms that it proposes. His DJ set, affectionately nicknamed “Brasucália” is in constant transformation though it never abandons popular Brazilian music classics and its revered artists.

Since the party’s launch in 2003, Deep Space has featured a who’s who of well known and then emerging artists from around the world representing a stunning array of musical styles that Deep Space is known for integrating into its open minded aesthetic. While the mission of Deep Space remains committed to sharing a love of dub, a vast, under-appreciated musical direction, the party has invited a great range of guest artists to share their creative dub mixing approaches to all things spacey, psychedelic and mind-bending.

From dubstep pioneers such as Mala, Goth-Trad, and Digital Mystikz, to house, techno & disco icons such as Giorgio Moroder, Dimitri from Paris, Theo Parrish, Rhythm & Sound, Ron Trent, Carl Craig, Joe Claussell, Derrick May, to cutting edge producers and tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs, Mr. Scruff, DJ Spooky and dub legends such as Adrian Sherwood with Pinch, Mutabaruka and U-Roy, and Brazilian icons Otto with Carlinhos Brown and plenty of live musical and dance performers, Deep Space continues to be a magnet for attracting many of electronic dance music’s most innovative artists. Almost all of the guest artists who play at Deep Space create truly one-of-kind, crate-digging "Deep Space sets."

Deep Space has been presented abroad at the Big Chill Festival (UK), Plastic People (UK), TDK Cross Central Festival (UK), Space Lab Yellow (Japan), Café Jamaica (Japan), Precious Hall (Japan), Phase (Japan), throughout France, in Berlin, Denmark, SONAR Festival in Barcelona and across the U.S. In 2010 Deep Space received a dedicated night at Burning Man’s Disorient camp. In 2004 Deep Space was nominated for “Best Club Night” by the internationally televised “DanceStar USA” awards. In 2005 & 2006 François K. won “Best Resident DJ Award” at the Club World Awards held in Miami. Deep Space was named “Best Party 2004” in Time Out New York. Deep Space was nominated for “Best Party,” at the Club World Awards 2006 and 2007. New York Magazine featured Deep Space in the “Best of New York 2006” issue. In 2013 Do Androids Dance lauded Deep Space as one of “The 10 Best Club Nights in the US.” In 2005 Deep Space NYC Vol. 1, a compilation mixed by François K., was released on Wave Music’s imprint Deep Space Media to critical acclaim.
